Should you choose an editor or proofreader to check your written work? The correct option depends on various factors and knowing the difference between the two obviously becomes crucial.

When it comes to essay correction and checking, the writer has an option of choosing between an editor and proofreader. These two terms may sound interchangeable at first, but there is a world of difference between the services.

Proofreading

Proofreading is basically a surface check of the document. It is concerned with correcting typos, spelling mistakes, syntax, punctuation, grammar and the like. Editing involves a more comprehensive and exhaustive combing of the document. The editor will not only check for spelling, punctuation and grammar but also focus on the clarity, accuracy and readability of the text. Therefore, while proofreading is limited to complying with the rules of the language, editing adopts a broader purview that encompasses the style, flow and cohesiveness of the writing based on the reading audience.

Making the choice

The correct choice between these two options depends on various factors like:

  • Level of writing– English is a demanding language with perplexing rules and inconsistencies. Non-native English speakers and others who are not completely proficient with English can get tripped up by the varied nuances and complexities inherent to the language. They may not be familiar with the turn of words or even the terminology used in the writing. Editing will help weed out the discrepancies in word choices, usage, style and the like. On the other hand, a fluent, well-versed, confident and experienced writer can opt for proofreading after repeated rounds of self-editing.
  • Stage of revision – Ideally, editing is considered the first level of review while proofreading pops up at the final stage prior to publication. The latter will also involve checking the physical layout and formatting of the document.
  • Level of perfection –The type of document and the target audience comes into play here. Academic papers, books, etc. that will be published or pass through the hands of discerning readers cannot afford to have any abnormality or inconsistency in the writing. Editing becomes a must here. In contrast, business proposals, applications or other correspondence just need to be free of errors; the quality of writing does not really matter much. Such documents can easily be optimized with a careful round of proofreading.

In sum, absolute perfection in writing calls for meticulous editing followed by vigilant proofreading to get the message across in a clear, coherent and error-proof manner. However, most writers opt for essay editing as an all-in-one option to polish and hone their writing to a professional level. This helps save time and costs as well.

Choosing the right editing service becomes crucial here. Skilled and experienced native English editors can do full justice to the document as they are intimately familiar with the complex demands of the language. Their eagle eye can easily pick up the most minor of errors and inconsistencies and give a professional sheen to the written material.
